Being in an urban area means that environmental and social responsibilities take a different form. On a social level, the growing epidemic of HIV/AIDS in South Africa, and specifically KwaZulu-Natal, is something very close to everyone’s hearts. The staff are given anonymous access to condoms and all suites are provided with a “Play it Safe” bag that explains the thought process behind the discreet placement of condoms.
On the environmental side, they have endeavoured to respect their surroundings and, in so doing, have removed numerous alien trees and vegetation, preferring to favour indigenous ones and keeping the garden as natural as possible. All trees are identified to create awareness of flora, a bird list is provided for each property and at Riverside four hours are dedicated daily to cleaning the river.
