Along the tropical belt of KwaZulu-Natal, nestled amongst the palm and giant Milkwood trees lies Teremok Marine, a luxurious five-star boutique lodge whose name translates from the Russian word for 'little hideaway'.
A feast for the senses, all of the eight suites are unique in design, layout and feel with small subtleties such as individual scent, mood-music and evening confectionary all creating an enchanting atmosphere. Each suite has an extra-length bed (king size or twin), handcrafted ceiling fan, air-conditioning and a private balcony. The open plan bathroom has a large rain-dance shower, freestanding bath, double basins and separate toilet with bidet
Extras include a home entertainment system with LCD screen and DVD player (a large library of DVDs is available from reception at any time), an iPod docking station, as well as complimentary WiFi ADSL internet connection available.

MILKWOOD SUITE
Kotchka Vladykin had a love for the beautiful and protected Milkwood trees endemic to the area. The giant one which stands ever-watchful over the property protectively wraps its branches around the former main bedroom sheltering it from the tropical heat. One could expect to find Audrey Hepburn languishing in this suite.
JULIET SUITE
The Juliet balconies inspired the décor for this ethereal suite and it is easy to imagine the two star-struck lovers taking refuge here. Perched on the top floor there is always a gentle sea breeze whispering through the trees, creating a romantic mood which harks back to a bygone era.
DURBAN VIEW SUITE
This suite has commanding views all the way to Durban and the Bluff, the city's whaling station was formerly based. The décor juxtaposes urban and rustic elements with sophisticated and handcrafted objet to capture the essence of Africa. New age activist Leonardo Di Caprio would be at home here.
PALM SUITE
The intrepid explorers of Africa like David Livingston left an indelible legacy and this region is extremely proud of its colonial roots. The colourful Indian immigrants were brought to Durban as labourers and their influence on the city has been enormous. This tropically-inspired suite pays homage to our unique local heritage.
VLADYKIN SUITE
Kotchka Vladykin, born in Russia, escaped the revolution as a young boy and joined his mother in England. He qualified as a mining surveyor which brought him to South Africa where a fairytale romance saw him elope with Louiza van Zwam, daughter of a Belgian diamond cutter.
This suite is a tribute to the Russian legacy of the man who built Teremok, and provides a space in which a modern-day Rasputin would be at peace.
ZODIAC SUITE
The giant Brazilian door (now found next to reception) is hand-carved with signs of the zodiac and originally stood in this suite as the front door of Teremok. Peek behind the door of the toilet - formerly the guest toilet - to find the zodiac tiles which represented the Vladykin family. This provided sufficient inspiration and whimsy to create a moody space in which you could expect to find the visionary Nostradamis.
BEETHOVEN SUITE
Debbie Davidson and her daughters who converted Teremok also own The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway. The first show to grace the stage at therustic venue in 2001 was Roll Over Beethoven. This quirky space, bathed in gold, is named in honour thereof. This would be the perfect space for artistic minds such as Rudyard Kipling.
DOUGLAS SUITE
Kotcha's daughter Nadya married Harvey Douglas in 1959 and, while on honeymoon, was asked by her father find piece of land that would be suitable for a family beach cottage. This contemporary suite, formerly the billiard room, pays tribute to another side of Teremok's rich history. Legendary screen siren Marilyn Monroe presides ever-watchful.
Living
Set on a large Umhlanga homestead and built in 1968, Russian immigrant Kotchka Vladykin ensured that the building - which languishes over six levels - was blessed with a timeless façade. The interior offers guests privacy along with nooks and crannies that provide a glimpse into his eccentric nature.
Linger
Serendipity abounds as Teremok's public areas are filled with unexpected surprises. The eclectic décor and design makes guests feel inherently at home with its understated luxury. Teremok offers various areas in which to relax, contemplate or soak up the view with complimentary hot drinks available at our two Coffee Stations, and a well-stocked Honesty Bar. For guests wanting to enjoy the fresh sea air, there's always our park-like gardens and pool, and access close-by to the beachfront promenade. The Teremok Spa is also open daily for those wanting to enjoy a treatment.
Nourish
Contemplating the nearby Indian Ocean through the weathered branches of a magnificent Milkwood tree is the perfect tonic to nourish the soul. The peace and seclusion of this airy dining room provides the feeling of being in a modern day tree house. The open-plan kitchen lures guests in for breakfast and Teremok has built an enviable reputation for their home-made, freshly prepared fare. Although a breakfast-only establishment, staff will gladly make restaurant recommendations and reservations, and Teremok offers complimentary transfers to local eateries.
